On October 9th, 2021, the NECA Board of Governors approved a revision to the NECA Standing Policy # 19, “Safety Programs and Safe Workers”. The name of this standing policy on safety was revised to “Safety and Health” to emphasize the need to address health related concerns in a company safety management system and address holistically the risk management of an organization. In addition to providing a safe working environment for workers, this policy also reminds contractors that elimination of the hazards should be the first priority, and normal and best practice, whenever achievable.
By continuing to participate in safety regulations and standards development, NECA continues to have a voice at the table where these rules are being developed. By recognizing the use of smart technologies and resources that assist and simplify the processes of training, documentation and managing a company’s safety management systems, employers and employees can be assured of a commitment to safety excellence and work together to achieve it.
The NECA Safety Leadership Summit was a huge success in Chicago in early November. Keynote and session speakers emphasized the roles of safety professionals in leading an organization’s safety management program and addressing risk management concerns. “Safety for Effective Leaders” from John Drebinger, spoke on how important it is for safety leaders to “lead by example," not just at work but in everything they do. Jake Harriman spoke of the inspirational leaders he met during his tours of duty and his work developing and deploying NURU International. New Information for Federal Contractors Engaged in Utility Areawide Agreements
On November 16th, 2021, the U.S. General Services Administration, (GSA) updated the FAQs on its website to address utility contractors and the federal vaccine mandates concerning Area-Wide Agreements. The information provided appears to clarify that the inclusion of vaccine mandates for Federal Contractors is not required under these area-wide agreements but may still be subject to other provisions of the OSHA Emergency Temporary Standard should it survive the court challenges currently underway.
